HuMp DaY Haiku - On the Fence

Kitchen window view.
Rusty heart upon the fence
highlighted by snow.

I love this rusty heart my husband made, and love that he's put it on the grape stake fence  right where I can see it from the kitchen window. He hand split all the rails on our fence, which was added the year after we moved into the house. It's aged nicely.
You can also see the duck whirly gig/weather vane (turns and flys when the wind blows) that his father made.
Color me happy on this gray day.

I started doing Hump Day Haiku with Carla Sonheim's Silly classes...  and decided as a challenge for myself, I'd continue.  In this process, I have found that creating a haiku (non rhyming poem with 5 - 7 - 5 syllables per line) feeds my soul.
I especially like creating them to go with my photos.

Paint Party Friday - Sunflower

I've had a bug this week, with a lot of congestion and a bad cough (my darling husband shares everything with me *grin*) so wasn't up to much but reading and sleeping and drinking a lot of tea with honey.

One thing I did work on was this little 3x3 mixed media canvas. Latest layer is beeswax. Not sure what else I'll add... or maybe it's done.

Check out what other artists have created this week at Paint Party Friday, hosted by Eva and Kristin.

Seaweed Heart

Lazy afternoon
wandering a sunny beach
brings us a surprise.

Impromptu beach visits are easy for us, living on Bellingham Bay. One of our sunny day drives brought us to Chuckanut Beach, where hubby was busy looking for raptors. (We did see a couple of bald eagles and red tailed hawks) I wandered looking for interesting rocks or other treasures, and came across this heart shape on the seaweed covered shore. I can see one on the rock as well, but you already know how fanciful I can get. :)

HuMp DaY Haiku - picnic

Imagine summer
and a warm evening picnic
with the one you love.

This photo is from the Northwest Flower and Garden show, although I cannot recall which display garden. It made me think of summer and picnics and warm weather, on this gray and rainy day.

At the Garden Show

Last week my husband and I joined the fabulous Garden Spot Nursery on their tour bus to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. As a group, we got in early to the display garden area, so were able to see them before the herds of people. The theme this year was A Floral Symphany.

Here are a few of our favorites from the show:

A hanging garden made from a pallet and a cool way to write on the garden wall.

We loved this mosaic blue bird garden art!

Music cut from non-skid material for the deck.

This antique harp was part of one display. The case itself dated back to 1893.

Glowing flower pots... wouldn't this be fun to help light the deck at night?

Clever! A piano bar for the deck! This was part of the container gardens display.

One of the 100 year+ old trees displayed this year. It was just beginning to bud.

It was a fun long day, and tiring after several hours wandering about. Luckily for us, the wonderful folks at Garden Spot gave us snacks and a glass of wine for the ride home. Now that's the way to do a tour. :)

Paint Party Friday - Still WIP

Another Paint Party Friday  going on with Eva and Kristin!

This week I worked a bit more on the 5 x 5 canvas landscape, which is part of my Autumn on the Mountain series.
I added a bit of color, and have some more toning to play with before adding the threads and other doo-dads I've planned.

Also, being thrifty, I  used some of the leftover paint on this torn paper background. It also has a few stamped images added.
It has since been cut up into postcards... more on that next week. :)

Rusty Heart

Just a rusty heart
made by an amazing man
because he loves me!

We saw these yard art hearts at the NW Flower and Garden show in Seattle last week.
I really, really wanted one.

My husband mentioned (rather than buy it on the spot) that he could make me one. We have an old whiskey/wine barrel planter that has finally fallen apart, so supplies were at hand.

And yesterday he surprised me with it for Valentines Day.

Now we need to go to the ReStore for some corrugated steel siding, so he can make me this:
Yes, I know how lucky I am.

Every day is valentines when the one you love fills you with joy!

HuMp Day Haiku - Peony

A glorious pink
and such a heavenly scent!
Pretty Peony!

Forced to bloom early
for the Flower and Garden show,
it's a special treat.

We do not have a garden conducive to growing peonies... too wet; too much clay and rocks. We're working on raised beds, but this years are dedicated to vegetables rather than flowers. Perhaps one day I can grow these in my garden too.

I started doing Hump Day Haiku with Carla Sonheim's Silly classes...  and decided as a challenge for myself, I'd continue.  In this process, I have found that creating a haiku (non rhyming poem with 5 - 7 - 5 syllables per line) feeds my soul.

Hearts in review

Happy Valentines Day!

Triumph Tulips from the Flower and Garden Show

In celebration, I'm remembering a few random hearts I discovered along the way this past year...

Paint Party Friday - WIP's

I'm having fun with Paint Party Friday, visiting as many artists as I can. I have yet to visit everyone, but I'm working on it. :)

Here's what I'm working on this week...

I did a bit more on the canvas I started last week... added some mesh and color on the "mountain. It needs MUCH more work, I just haven't had the time this week.

Mixed Media canvas
I also worked on this canvas I started a while ago; added stenciling with leftover paint from the other project.

Torn paper background
And this torn paper background's painted layers are from left over paint also. This will be added to and cut up for post cards.

Graffiti

 Graffiti message
written on cement pilings
underneath the dock

Walking on the beach brings many discoveries. On this day I saw many birds, shells, driftwood and rocks... and several hearts (I later discovered one in the clouds.) This was a favorite. Graffiti with a good message for those passing by.

HuMp DaY Haiku - Sun lit bay

Sparkling sun lit bay
Heron fishing at waters edge
Eagle soars beyond

A glare filled view of Chuckanut Village beach, with a couple of herons out at the waters edge. An eagle spooked the water birds out on the bay, but I could not capture it.
I am going to get new camera... I AM! :)

Book hearts

Last week we made a trip across town to our favorite local bookstore, Village Books. I'm always on the lookout for random hearts. Here were a couple of finds in the front displays.

No clue on what's inside the cover, but I couldn't resist.

Message in the Clouds

I keep seeing hearts.
They are everywhere even
when I'm not looking.

I took this picture of the cloud formation at Little Squalicum beach while there with my husband this week, on a raptor excursion. (He's taking a class so we're out looking for birds a lot lately) I thought it would be a good example for one of my abstract landscapes.

It was not until I downloaded the photo and started editing that I noticed the heart in the center. I think the universe is telling me something. :)

This has not been cropped, it's straight out of the camera. I just added the watermark.

Paint Party Friday - Scattered

It's another Paint Party Friday!  Here's a bit of what I worked on this week:

I worked on a spread from the Doodles Unleashed Workshop...

I played with Carla Sonheim's Imaginary Animals technique.  It needs more shading...

And I started a textured landscape canvas painting, using acrylics. This 5 x 5 x 2 inches, and is embedded with dried lavender buds. After the first applications of paint, I can see I'm going to need to do a lot more "poking" of the brush into the crevices. :)

I've determined that I have too many things going on all at once. No wonder I'm feeling a bit scattered. :)
