Splash of blue heralds

it's spring; so cheery among

the rain drenched garden.

I have found that creating a haiku (non rhyming poem with 5 - 7 - 5 syllables per line) feeds my soul. I especially like creating them to go with my photos and art.

This photo captures most of this verdant little garden, one of the container/miniature gardens a the Northwest Flower and Garden Show this year. I love the whole look, the moss, the violets, the ferns and especially the shoes! I'll have to look at the thrift stores for cool old shoes to art up and add to the garden.

I love how the Autumn Sedum blossoms frequently grown in a heart shape! You can barely see the little chickadee metal sculpture that has been engulfed by the plant as the summer progressed.

Still blooming

Most of my summer flowers have finished their blooming, However these lovely hardy fuchsias are still going strong. They do encourage me. And the leaves are starting to change, so the colors of nature continue.

So much to do, so little time. I'm wondering how I'll have time to sleep with all I need to get ready for the Allied Arts Holiday Festival... a booth to get assembled, art to get finished, and very little time to do it all with my work schedule this month. O.o
My Etsy shops are keeping me hopping too; a good thing!

And so, you'll see very little of me here for a short while. Our Hump Day Haiku will continue, but probably not much more than that until I feel like I'm ready for the show.

Morning Dew

Tiny heart surprise

I see a tiny black heart in the center of the chrysanthemum. If you need to squint to see it, that's perfectly acceptable. And if you want to call me fanciful, that's acceptable too. :)

Rudbeckia with a side of blue

Rudbeckia, also known as Black Eyed Susan, blooming through the Oregon grape. Signs that autumn is indeed coming.  

The Oregon Grape berries are extra heavy this year. I'll have to check the farmers almanac to see what that means.

Blue Bird

It's Friday, and I'm playing with Paint Party Friday again this week, hosted by Eva and Kristin. I'm showing a new little 4x4 mixed media canvas I finished this afternoon.

The colors are much richer than the photo shows, more yellowy green in the background. Ah well! 

This little bluebird has come to bring me, hopefully, a better frame of mind. I've had a rough week or two, and am a bit in the doldrums today. Among other things, (long boring stories) our weather has turned chilly again, and we're headed into Autumn without actually having summer. (I don't count 2-3 days over 80 as summer, sorry!)  It makes me grumpy to have to wear socks to keep my toes warm at the end of August.
And since I'm in such a funk already without sufficient sunlight, I'm going shopping for SAD lights: one for my office and one for my reading chair and one for my studio. If I'm this blue at the end of August, December will freak me out! *tee hee*

quiet cousin time

Cousin Paula hosted our "cousin's reunion" this past weekend, close to home in Skagit Valley, a mere 30 minute drive away. We drove back and forth since our little motorhome isn't running well. The reunions are always a good time. We did a lot of visiting, playing with little kids we don't see often enough, eating, more visiting, silent auction, sitting around the fire pit visiting and making 'smores... fun times, even though it was chilly. It was a delightful weekend with the perfect mix of people!

Of course, I took virtually no pictures, even though I had my camera. Sunday morning, when I arrived, it was quiet in Carolyn's garden while the others were making their breakfast. I wandered with my cell phone and took a few pictures. I love the art and flowers in her garden, and isn't the garden shed cool?

Visiting Family

I'm at a family reunion this weekend, sharing and visiting and having a good time, despite the crappy chilly weather. (Come on weather gods, give us a break!) 

This little 4x4 beeswax collage piece is going with me for the silent auction that we hold to help cover the cost of all the food and supplies needed for our herd of folks. It's always a fun time.

It's summertime they say. You couldn't tell by our recent weather. Rain and rain and rain. When the rain stopped, I ventured out to the garden (in my goulashes) to see what treasures were left behind. There were quite a few. Do you see the raindrop heart? 


I really would like some warm and sunshine. Even knowing some areas of our country are drying up and blowing away in the heat, I still would like just a bit of it. Just a bit. I really, really really would. :)

Summer's here at last! 

It always seems that summer weather finally arrives when the monarda (aka bee balm) begins to bloom.  Our weather the past week has been summery, sunny in the high 70's, with a few thunderstorms thrown in. 
Bee Balm is hands down my favorite flower in our garden, loved also by the hummingbirds and bumble bees. The garden is alive with activity!

Garden delights!

I love this time of year, all the colors and textures and yummy treasures in our garden.

Our yellow zucchini is finally setting on... a few more days and we'll be eating it! So close! 

We have been munching on lettuce from our garden for two months now... it liked the cooler weather we were having. This lettuce is called flashy trout.

Morning Solitude

Trees alive with singing birds

Nature rests my soul

I love wandering the garden in the early morning when the yard is alive with birds, chirping and flitting about the trees. It's a restful sound.

Our hybrid spirea is in it's glory; the lovely chartreuse leaves make a gorgeous setting for the bright pink blossoms. This morning I see hearts among the bright colors. 

Our wild strawberries are ready to eat. I am pleasantly surprised that the birds have left us some; they've been devouring the Salmonberries!

And joy of joys, the mondarda (bee balm) is starting to bloom.

Spring morning

Perched high in the Hawthorne trees, a chorus of birds joyfully serenaded me as I wandered the garden this morning. The garden changes daily this time of year, and the early morning ramble soothes my restless mind. 

The hybrid bleeding hearts have thrown their blossoms in the past few days. I've been impatiently waiting; a short cold snap delayed them a bit. Our native bleeding hearts must be shy. I can't seem to get a good photo of their pale pink blooms to share. 

Grape hyacinths are in full bloom this week, poking up everywhere. I transplanted some last year when we were moving a garden, and it's fun to see just where I put the bulbs. Some are coming up in places I'm sure I did not plant. Perhaps the mole who visited us last year helped a bit with their relocation. *wink*  This little clump seems happy under the lavender bushes with a little white stone bunny as a companion. Bunny may move as the season progresses, though for now, he's quite content.

A memory garden - dia de bloglandia

This is the first year I've formally observed Dia de los Muertos, which I'm celebrating with Rebecca and Stephanie at dia de bloglandia.  While I did not complete the shrine I started, it occurred to me that our backyard garden contains a variety of reminders of our family who have passed.

 

My husbands father was an avid gardener. He died before we married, and I so wish I'd have had more time to get to know him. His garden contained these lovely Autumn sedum. 

My husbands mother was generous with her gardening knowledge and shared a variety of plants from her garden. This yarrow became quite invasive, (and a bit of a joke).  However, after her death, it became a constant reminder of her generous love.

The love in a mist came from seeds from my Auntie Ruth, several years before she died. She was always generous with her seeds, and told us some of the seeds she shared were from plants originally given her by my Grandma Rose. 

The frog statues in my garden remind me of my Auntie Rosemary, who told me once that frogs were protection. I've had one at my front door and throughout our garden since. 

This angel sign was a gift from my daughter, and is something I continue to cherish in her memory.
